Promise: How to Structure Your Novel

Well, I hope that you will take away the idea that structuring and coming up with a plan before starting to write a novel or a short story, or any kind of fictional work, will save you a tremendous amount of time later on.  I’ll show you the specific techniques for structuring your novel so that before you even start writing, you will guarantee that you are going to finish.  So, no more writer’s block, and no more getting stuck.  You are going to learn the keys to having a firm structure in place for writing fiction too. Well, I think that any of us who have tried to write fiction have encountered a problem in which we get very excited about an idea, and the idea may be based upon a character, it might be based upon a setting, or it might be a plot idea about something that happens.  We sit down and start furiously writing, and then we write the length of a chapter, maybe, and things start to get a little fuzzy.  We aren’t quite sure where to go, and we start to get a little bit lost.

There are many reasons why this is very important, but the first reason I have is the most personal and, maybe, psychological.  If you think about someone that just happens to stumble on your book that’s on Amazon.  What are they going to see first?  The first thing they are going to notice will probably be the cover.  Their eyes are going to be drawn to it, so you’ve got to have a great cover.  The next thing they are going to look at is the title, or the main title.  They are going to read that and think, “Is it good?  Is it interesting?” The next thing might be the subtitle, but the second or third thing that they are going to look at is that little star and that little number, or maybe the big number that’s next to that star, that tells a person what’s going on with the book.  They are going to look to see, “Does this book have 5,000 reviews?”  Then, they are going to know that this is an offer that has been around a long time, or this is a celebrity… There’s a lot of, uh, promotion going on with this.  Or, maybe they're going to see a couple of hundred and think, “Wow.  This book is legit. This is someone that has a fanbase, and it’s a 4 ½ star.”

Promise: Successful Negotiations

First of all, thank you for the invite.  My tagline is, “You’re always negotiating.” What that means is that the actions you engage in today influences/impacts tomorrow’s potential outcomes.  Thus, the better you can negotiate, the greater outcomes you are going to experience, no matter what it is that you’re trying to achieve in life. [bctt tweet="You should never want a deal so badly that you are willing to cave in, in order to get some aspect of the deal. " via="no"] First of all, you should always gather as much information about any situation that you’re going to be involved in, prior to your negotiations, as possible.  The reason for this is that the more information you gather, the more of a strategy you’ll be able to develop, dependent upon the individual with whom you are negotiating.  That’s to say, you can use the exact same strategy that netted the exact outcome that you were seeking in one particular situation, but because the variable happens to be that you are negotiating with a different person, you would then have to use a different set of strategies.

Big Promise: Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing

Well, I think that the big promise, as far as I am concerned is that a lot of people have questions about whether they should self-publish or seek out a traditional or indie publisher.  I have done both, and I can easily share the pros and the cons of each approach. [bctt tweet="Whether you self-publish or traditionally publish, you will be part of the marketing and promotional efforts." via="no"] I think that before self-publishing became so easy, there really was only one choice, which was to approach a publisher or be approached by a publisher, write up a book proposal, create an outline, a sample chapter, and an analysis of the target market.  You’d need to show how your book was different than other books.  Those steps are all very important to make sure that you have a viable book, but the difficulty with traditional publishing is that, from an entrepreneurial standpoint, you do a whole lot of work, and you get small royalties in return.  However, a traditional publisher, or an indie publisher, can open doors for you that you would have never had opened if you hadn’t been published.

Thanks for having me here.  I promise you that the next few minutes will be very, very valuable for you.  My big promise to you is that you will overcome the barriers to writing a book.  You know, everyone wants to write a book, but somehow they talk themselves out of it.  During the next few minutes, we are going to go over some of the most frequently asked questions. As you grow your brand, and as you grow as an author, or as an entrepreneur or a business owner, you want to increase authority.  Understand that authority is a currency.  The more that you have, the more fabulous prizes you can exchange that currency for.  If you have no authority, no respect, and no influence in your space, it’s going to be awfully hard to do just about anything. [bctt tweet="As you work with people who have higher authority and influence than you, this brings you up." username="danielhall"] I think most of us write a book because we feel like there’s an impact that we want to make in the world.  But, if you don’t have an audience, and no one is willing to promote your book to their audience, again, it’s going to be awfully tough to gain any sort of momentum.  So, it really is the rocket fuel that makes everything go as an author.  And, I’ll tell you that as you work with people who have higher authority and influence than you, this brings you up.  So, the game is now that we just want to associate with high-authority and influential people as much as possible.  A great way to do that is through the media or with other digital influencers.

William Hung's Story

What happened was that during school, I wasn’t doing well.  I felt miserable.  One day I saw a poster for a school talent show at the Clark Kerr Dormitory.  I figured, “Why not?  There’s nothing to lose.”  So, I sang one of my favorite songs, “She Bangs,” by Ricky Martin.  I had no expectations, but somehow, I won!  The grand prize was a DVD player.  That gave me the confidence to audition for American Idol.

Promise: How to Pack Live Events with Your Target Audience

The big promise is that I’m going to share with people how they can really pack an event with their target audience in order to build their business as well as how to really find their target audience.  I’m going to share some tweaks in your thinking that will help you really reach the exact person you are looking for to help, and in the process, to make a living and make money. [bctt tweet="You have to understand that if you consistently do an event each year, the income can easily double." username="danielhall"] First of all, you should have an online presence of some sort.  That is primary.  Secondly, if you really want a rabid base of supporters, you either need to go out and speak at events, or eventually, I would highly recommend housing your own event.  There’s no more rabid of a fan base than with a person that raises their hand and says, “I’m willing to travel to be in a room with you for a day or two days, and learn from you, and get infused with your culture, your philosophy, and your methodology.”  You can’t ask for a better client, and those people tend to be your greatest clients, and your greatest, what I call, promoters of your brand and what you represent.

I help a lot of influencers, by the way.  I’ve done over 2,000 events, so I’m not new to the game.  I’m fairly young, but I’ve spent, literally, a decade packing in events.  When I tell you events, I’ve done fishing tournaments, poker tournaments, sending people to the World Series of Poker, business conferences, one-day socials, and the only thing I haven’t done is golf tournaments.  I’m not a big golfer.  But, I mean, I could have done that.  Workshops, one-days, meetups, you name it, I have experience across the spectrum.  There’s nothing better than meeting your audience live and building off of that.

Big Fat Promise: Momentum Building in a Product or Book Launch

Thank you so much for having me on the show.  For those listening, hello, hello.  It’s nice to meet you all.  I’m really glad to be here.  Today’s big, fat promise… I believe that if we can create momentum when we are launching something, like I launched Perky Perky… Holy Cow!  The sales just show up.  So, I want to teach moment.  I want to teach momentum building in launches today. I think that we should care because we spend so much time and energy doing a launch.  So, if we do it in a way that’s intentional and allows for people to know about your product beforehand, then your launch will be more successful.  It just makes sense, right?  A lot of people think about product launches or book launches like, “If I build it, they will come.”  They think that, all of a sudden, it’s going to be an overnight success, but there’s really no such thing as overnight success.  There’s time and energy put in both before and during the launch, which can really create and craft an experience for your customers and your potential clients.

Promise: How to Publish Guestbooks

We’re going to reveal a little, hidden gem that we found through our publishing business.  We found this little gem, this little niche, doing guest books on Amazon.  It’s really an underused niche, which is great.  That’s what you want to look for, a niche where there’s not tons of people in it already.  It’s not super-saturated. [bctt tweet="There seems to be a demand for these books, but there’s a relatively low supply. " username="danielhall"] So, we found this little gem, and we started publishing guestbooks.  We have a bunch of other journals out there, and recipe books, and daily planners.  They do alright, but this gem of finding guestbooks seems like it has done better than some of those other niches.  So that’s what I want to tell people about today, and just kind of walk them through how they can get involved in this niche of doing guestbooks.

Promise: How to Generate an Unlimited Amount of Leads

Thanks for having me!  I guess the big takeaway for today is going to be lead generation.  I believe that this is the biggest challenge that entrepreneurs face.  Well, there’s actually two.  I have the privilege of speaking on stages all over the globe, and so I ask entrepreneurs, “What’s the biggest challenge you face in your business today?”  Although I always receive a myriad of different responses, it always comes down to two.  The first is time.  Time is the #1 precious commodity that none of us can buy.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone.  It’s fleeting.  The other is leads, or business coming through the door. Promise: How to Found a Business on "Product-o-cracy"

First, thanks for having me.  I appreciate it.  I would say that the big result we’re looking for today is how to create a business that is founded on what I call a “product-o-cracy”.  That’s actually not discussed in Fastlane.  It’s discussed in the new book that I released, but a product-o-cracy allows business owners to grow virally.  It allows them to grow beyond a linear construct.  Essentially, it puts them in the driver’s seat to, pardon the phrase, “print money.” [bctt tweet="A “product-o-cracy” is based upon a unique product offering/service that is not offered by someone else." via="no"] A good example of a way to look at this is that there’s always a restaurant in your neighborhood, or in your city, that’s always crowded, but they don’t advertise.  That’s the essence of a product-o-cracy.  It’s when you have a product that is compelled by word-of-mouth and there’s an expansion, so the need to advertise becomes secondary.

A lot of entrepreneurs are not running product-o-cracies; they are running marketing firms.  So if they stop advertising, their business slowly starts to die.  That’s the difference between just a regular old business and a company that’s running a product-o-cracy.  A great example of a product-o-cracy is my book The Millionaire Fastlane.  I think that I must have spent $3,000 in total on promoting it since it was released seven or eight years ago.  The growth was not because I’m some kind of great marketer or because I hacked something.  The growth was because the product was good enough for people to recommend over and over, and that, in essence, is the product-o-cracy.

I don’t know what the percentages are, but the vast majority of authors that write books don’t make any money from their books.  I mean, it’s got to be 97:3, or 99:1, or whatever.  The fact that people don’t take action on the things they need to do is actually really good for those of us that do take action, right?  If there are some people who are paying attention right now, all you really have to do is execute on the stuff that we’re talking about, and that we’re going to talk about.
